Two quotes suggesting we avoid both overly personal and default “identity” approaches in art-making:
the artist’s identity and history should not be necessary for the understanding of a piece. The object itself has an intrinsic value. Which is a wonderful statement, and I wonder how it holds up when i start doing feminist artwork!

He betrays fixed thinking in recommending certain artists, subtly suggesting that feminism—or worse, women artists as a general category—comes prepackaged with ready discourse attached. In doing so he does a great disservice to these established artists by implying that there is a text-book approach to dealing with women and art.
