I learned some great spanish words last night:

[warning: there are links to porn in this post. of course, they cease to be porn in this context because I have rendered them post-modern examples of modern culture, much like Mark Tribe. Nevertheless, beware ye who enter this post]

  • menguante : waning, as in the moon. I was a told I cannot talk about ‘mi amor menguante’ nor ‘mi madera menguante.’
  • popis: flashy, yuppie, fancy.
  • que chingon: great, etc, very versatile word
  • chido: funky: can be bad or good

And the winner of the evening (of course) is “tortilerras” which literally means tortilla makers, but is slang for lesbians. This is not due to, as I hazarded, “geometry”, but due to the alternating slapping hand motion tortilla makers use.

I still don’t quite understand that one. Though I have found many examples where the geometry argument makes sense.

The most fascinating thing is that a google image search of “tortilleras” takes like a full page to finally get to an actual tortilla maker. The metaphor has replaced the original. Not quite the signifier over the signified, but still, I would argue there is a bit of the post-modern in that phenomemon.

Finally, if you are at a restaurant, and the waiter/ress asks if you would like another drink, you are to respond: “si, para que sueñe con los angelitos.” (sone)?
