Something that is perhaps not clear is that I do not only think that art positioning is arbitrary and bullshit, I think everything is. I was going to say that the reality we all walk around believing is just a default setting we can edit, but its not even a default setting.
It’s all arbitrary. Governments have no inherent right to draw lines, we never signed any contract that says we believe or obey anything they are about, whatever Rousseau. These beliefs we share are invented, and very, very, very little that we :know” about the world is anything more than a received idea, which in some bizarre twist of logic we give more credence than those invented things we invent ourselves. No, those ideas are imaginary.
And I don’t mean this in any grand sort of way. Quite simply, the things we take for granted are just one option, and few of us even realize this. When I returned from Africa, I had seen another life, and I came back to NY and realized that all this stuff that gets us all wound up is just a choice, an invention. A choice we are not aware of.
And this is not to deny its power, because, knowing this, I had a 9-5 (well, 4-midnight) job within a few months.
So, arts not bullshit, most things are. But bullshit we all believe in is realer than any gut base reality hidden underneath it all, as far as we see and act.
