“As a painting, over time, may reveal an early image laid on canvas before the surface was reworked and covered with subsequent layers of paint (pentimento), so do landscapes reveal to the knowing eye traces of their own history – the biophysical and cultural forces which in combination have shaped them over time…”

- ECOLOGY, SITE, AND DESIGN STUDIO, taught by Colgate Searle

Those words take on a much grittier and stickier (in that it sits with you longer) feel when you consider his Upcity proposal to turn the 1-195 bridge in the jewelry district into an elevated mini-neighborhood instead of ripping it down.

” “The beauty of our proposal is that it provides an alternative vision that would creatively reuse this infrastructure and make it into an attractive and useful asset to the city without the costly and wasteful effort of removing and disposing of it.” Searle estimates that their proposal would save the city some $10 million.”

If you’ve forgotten, I mentioned Colgate Searle last Spring for his Sandman Mask in wood that I fell in love with at the RISD alumni/faculty auction.
